Day 2

HELLLLLOOOOOO AMERICA!!!! Bashful's here again to tell you all about our event filled Day 2!

First off our sleeper of the day goes to........this random guy in New Orleans!! He slept through the entire presentation of our research.

Our day started before the sun was up as we awoke at 5:45 am. After packing up our sleeping bags and boarding the bus, we headed out to Auburn University in Alabama.  A giant group photo was taken in front of the clock tower that served as proof of our early rising.

In case you thought we were lying, check the clock, IT IS TOO EARLY

Not even school starts this early

Maddie Lawson let us in on the cool tradition of Alabama sports fans after big wins. Students, citizens, and even the mayor journey to the campus of Auburn University to “TP” the oak trees.

Maybe one day soon we can sport some Auburn clothes as students!

Breakfast on the bus was every teen’s favorite meal; POP-TARTS! Everyone was able to pick from a range of delicious options along with apple juice and water. After a short stop at the Mississippi Welcome Center we were on our way to Louisiana.

Couldn't do anything without our fearless bus driver, MR. G!

And of course our fearless leaders.  Typical...Matt working hard, Grant being silly, and Dallas smiling for no reason!  We love our counselors.

Our scenic drive made its completion at the famous city of New Orleans, Louisiana. After unloading the bus we met at the Mississippi River where we learned about the research done by our new friends on everything from the state of Alabama to Jackson Square.

Almost there!!!  The good 'ol bus, dubbed the 'Merica Mobile, leading the way

Glad to be in New Orleans.  The Mississippi River is looks just as big as the ocean.

Matt McConell shared a weird law established in Mississippi. Apparently it is illegal to explain the practice of polygamy to others.

Our awesome “Quote of the Day” came from none other than Ana Lee Decker who informed us of the crazy Louisiana law banning anyone from tying their pet giraffe to the light poles on Bourbon Street.

Trey Dry did his research on the Mississippi river and let us know that it flows at a very slow pace of 3 miles per hour.

Scotlyn McDowell told us about the delicious coffee at Café Du Monde and how its unique flavor comes from their use of chicory herb.

Carson Little informed us that the beautiful St. Louis Cathedral had an incident where a bomb exploded in the church in 1909. Fortunately, no one was injured but the cathedral experienced some structural damage.

Claire Fry sharing her research as the Mississippi river tries to sneak up on her.  She only got a little wet.

While teaching us about the state of Alabama, Cailin Baldwin told us that it is the only state in the entire country to have an alcoholic beverage as their state drink.

Café Du Monde was one of all the camper’s favorites spots because of their deliciously fluffy beignets and silky café au lait. Counselor Josh and Dallas had some fun with a few participants as they surprised them with a powdered sugar shower after blowing on their beignets! To document this hilarious moment, Josh made sure to take lots of pictures.

An up-close look at our delicious treat, beignets.  YAAAAY SUGAR!

Avery Clark, Leni Hull, Kate Reed Inabinet, and Rhianonn Smith enjoying Cafè Du Monde.

Sloan Edemann, Trey Dry, Katey Taylor, Ashley Lowry, and Bryson Bingham eagerly waiting for their beignets.

Alex Garrigus, Meghan Maxey, Sophie Andrews, Nat Warner, and Emily Maxey all smiles with treats on the way.

Dallas couldn't pass up the opportunity to get her brother Brooks covered in powdered sugar.

Josh and Dallas were pretty sneaky, Allison Roney was one of the many victims of the sugar ambush.
Not even the other counselors were safe from Josh's rampage.  Even Sarah fell victim to hurricane Josh

Not every was covered in sugar, but made sure their stomachs were!  Riley Kiefer, Maddie Lawson, Kayleen Smith, Sam Russel, and Emily Davis were watchful enough to avoid the sugar shower.

Shopping on Bourbon Street came next where the entire crew bought lots of souvenirs for themselves and their families. Among the dynamite city of New Orleans were many sensational different cultures, some of which led parades for Teens Westward bound to experience! Some participants had their fortunes told or stopped in some voodoo shops but all witnessed and even enjoyed the street show musicians preforming jazz; founded in the heart of New Orleans.  As the day went on we broke up into separate groups and toured the city. Each group came back with many interesting stories including people dressed in costumes and very individualized shops. Some of these groups even got to experience first-hand the "parades" in New Orleans.

We were our own happy parade as we explored the famous Bourbon Street

Maybe a highlight of the day for Teens Westward Bound, we all gathered around to watch Ty Brown battle the street dancer painted in silver, we came to the conclusion Ty clearly had won.

On the way back to the camp site we had a very exciting bus ride. Sarah started the dance battle on the bus with the song Lip Gloss and the YMCA! She knew how to rap the entire song accompanied by her AWESOME dance moves!  As we left New Orleans, Matt told all of the participants on the bus that if anyone could their breath crossing the next bridge, he would pay them $100. Clearly we all accepted the challenge not realizing that the bridge would take a good 20 minutes to cross, and we all lost before we finished the first half mile. As we got closer to our campsite, Ty rescued a turtle from the middle of the road and then the turtle had the decency of peeing on him in the process.  Not just peeing, but REAAALY peeing.  Our biology tip of the day was turtles pee A LOT!

Once we arrived at our campsites the groups split up to do their responsibilities and practice for tonights competition....the dixieland delight dance.  Dinner consisted of a home cooked favorite, spaghetti and garlic bread with a side salad and popsicles for dessert.

Abby Christian doing the hardest part of cooking spaghetti, boiling the water

Sophie Andrews could barely contain her hunger after tasting how good dinner was

Josie Crooks and Drew Hughlett

Claire Fry, Maddie Draper, and Counselor Josh goofing around after dinner

Dallas may be a bit stressed, good thing she has the Happy group helping her out.  They might wanna start by teaching her how to use a ladle.

This is the second day in a row Tristan Benson was caught enjoying his dinner

Alex Cormier was all about the dessert

Dinners done, and now time for the competition

Once dinner was finished, it was onto the dixieland delight competition.  All of our practice and hard work came down to this moment of truth as we performed our skits for the entire group.  it was a hard fought battle, with many interpretations and creative ideas that had us laughing to tears.  In the end it was the Bashful group (WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO)  that came out victorious.

Nolan Beaty and Hunter Wood led the sneezy group with a performance of a lifetime.  Uncle Kurt was born.

Brooks Godbold tried to take advantage of the song during sleepy's performance but was quickly, and somewhat violently rejected by Cailin Baldwin

The Bashful's showing us their best side

The Dopey's stood up to their name with a hilarious performance

The Grumpy group went with the 'ol role reversal, girls as the guys and guys as the girls.

Dosey-Do
The Happy's had Emilio Blair to help with the guitar.  They rolled and rapped their way to an awesome show

Mack Slaughter found some lingerie and was a homegrown country girl with Avery Clark.

Tonight we will be sleeping in cabins at Fountainbeleau Park in Madisonville, Louisiana.  Tomorrow we hit the big state, or as Josh calls it, the country...of Texas.  Pull out your cowboy boots and spur up, everything is bigger in Texas, including our excitement!!!!
